If Tom Petty & Joan Jett had a baby Zoe Rose would be that child. She has a cool raspy authentic sound to her that I found myself getting caught up in. Her sound is a gritty-dark soulful voice, that's what draws you in. Zoey Rose with her own eclectic style/Janas Joplin meets Portishead, is definitely worth listening to and I would recommend that you like, listen follow & share her music. And definitely put her on your playlist
Look out for the interview coming soon!(You can listen to her music below.)
Interview:
Q:
Who were your musical influences growing up?
Zoe Rose:
When I was really young I listened to a lot of Jazz and Blues. Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Ella and Louis, Robert Johnson and B.B. King… as I got older I really got into Janis, the Beatles and Johnny Cash… In my teenage years I discovered Metal and Punk with sounds from Floyd, Sabbath, Ramones as well as some newer stuff like Korn, Slipknot, and Green Day… The Sex Pistols actually inspired me to start my first band. We were called the Pocket Rockets.I need to add Shakey Graves to my list of influences. I discovered him about 5 years ago. He inspired me to create Sam, my suitcase drum.
Q:
Your song "Storm" what is that about?
Zoe Rose:
The Storm is mainly about being true to yourself. Fighting hypocrisy and pridefulness. That’s the basic understanding anyway lol There are definitely layers there.
Q:
What is your creative process when writing a song?
Zoe Rose:
I usually start with a guitar riff, chord progression, or a lyrical phrase and build around it. Most of the time a sound will just smack me in the brain and I have to get it out.
Q:
What is the "Goblin King" about?
Zoe Rose:
The Goblin King is kind of a Dark Children’s story. Kind of reminiscent of old Folk Tales. I just got this sound in my head and an image and needed to create it. There’s like a whole little movie going in my head. That one is definitely a special song for me. It’s pretty different than most everything else I’ve done.
Q:
What kind of music do you currently listen to?
Zoe Rose:
I listen to a bit of everything. Genres confuse me lol but I guess I mainly listen to Country, Rock, Blues and classic Jazz. Lately I’ve been really enjoying the Dark Folk vibe.
Q:
What do you think about Stocktons music culture? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it?
Zoe Rose:
I think Stockton has an amazing musical past and a big underground scene. There are a lot of talented people here. Sadly I find it to be lacking in venues and it gets pretty cliquey. I see the same bands on the lineup together a lot. I think it has a lot to do with the lack of venues and the amount of competition in the area. I’d definitely love to see more diversity when it comes to who you see at the shows.
Q:
What do you want your legacy to be?
Zoe Rose:
I guess I’d want my legacy to be my music and my support for the Arts in our local scene.
Q:
Is it hard to be a woman in the music industry? What's your opinion on being a woman in the music industry?
Zoe Rose:
I don’t know about it being harder for women. Others may disagree. There definitely seem to be less of us, especially when it comes to full bands. I’ve organized a few Women’s Showcase events and I definitely have had difficulty finding full bands that are all women or mainly women. There are a few, but not enough.
Q:
What are your next projects you have coming up?
Zoe Rose:
I’m working on a new album called “For Better, For Worse”. A couple of the songs have collaborations with other local musicians. I’m really excited about it. I also have a couple singles that’ll be done in the next couple months.
I’ve started playing music with my sister too. We’ve been working on getting a set together and will be playing a few shows as Kinship Cadence.
Q:
Who would you like to collaborate with?
Zoe Rose:
Locally?? Anyone lol I love collaborations. I always find I learn something new.
Q:
You have any shout outs?
Zoe Rose:
Shoutouts would be Tyler Grilli, Geovanie Brooks, Snap Jackson, Mama Coon, Ash Bricky, Hatch Workshop, Terra Coffee, Tocco Divino Salon/Cuppa Joe Coffee, the old Blackwater Cafe (R.I.P) Music Go Round, Brandon James (Channel Brew R.I.P) and my old band mates (Roxy Looney and Alia) and my first guitar teacher Liam. They have all contributed to my growth as a musician in one way or another. And to all the awesome people who have supported me in any way. (There are too many to list)
